Overview

Yum! Brands is the world's largest restaurant company with more than 37,000 restaurants in over 117 countries and territories and more than 1 million associates. Their brands - KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell – are the global leaders of the chicken, pizza and Mexican-style food categories.

The company’s restaurant chains – KFC and Pizza Hut – have been operating in Australia since 1968 with both company owned and franchised stores. KFC and Pizza Hut operate as separate organisations and both are headquartered at Frenchs Forest in Sydney.

KFC outlets largely comprise drive through, in-line and mall stores. There are approximately 153 company owned stores and 500 stores owned by independent or franchise partners.

Under NGER legislation, Yum! is required to report greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption for KFC and Pizza Hut stores across Australia.

Challenge

There are more than 600 KFC stores in Australia, and approximately 80% are owned by Franchisees. Franchisees have individual agreements with their utility suppliers meaning their consumption data is supplied in multiple formats at varying levels of frequency. Adding to the challenge was that whilst energy and fuel data for the company owned stores was accessible, only cost was captured and analysed in detail.

Solution

KFC Australia utilises Eden Suite’s environmental data management system and managed services to streamline store data capture, environmental reporting and performance benchmarking.

KFC Australia uses Eden Suite’s full data stewardship service to obtain data files from suppliers and internal stakeholders. The Eden Suite Support team obtained delegated authority and contact suppliers on behalf of storeowners to receive the data. A series of checks are run on the files to ensure they are of reasonable quality before being loaded into The Network for automated standardisation and calculation of CO?-e. KFC Australia energy suppliers include many of the major national retailers in addition to geographically specific suppliers.

KFC Australia continually monitor their greenhouse gas inventory via the Eden Suite user interface (UI) for performance management and best practice identification. KFC Australia can also run their own reports (including NGERs) at anytime.

Due to the dynamic nature of the business – regular addition of new stores or changing store ownership or location – an up-to-date organisational structure for reporting was critical to the solution’s success. As this store register was maintained in KFC Australia’s financial system, the Eden Suite team developed a data exchange link that enables the organisational structure to be updated automatically on a monthly basis.

KFC Australia also make use of Eden Suite’s full Managed Service option, with the Eden Suite team undertaking all supplier engagement, management of data quality, performing data completeness activities, running reports and maintaining KFC Australia store details in a highly confidential and secure database.

Eden Suite gives KFC Australia efficient access to franchisee data without limiting the franchisee’s authority or flexibility with regards to selecting their own suppliers.
